The source I decided to do my project on is the TV show Charmed which was created by Constance M. Burge and produced by Aaron Spelling. I decided to use this show as my project source because of the impact this show has made on me personally. My sisters, who are both about 10 years older than me, grew up watching this show and were able to connect and bond over it. I eventually decided to try to watch the show to be able to connect with them the way they did with each other, and it worked. Charmed is about three sisters, like my sisters and I, who end up finding out they are witches. But they’re not just any witches, they’re the charmed ones. The Halliwell sisters are considered the most powerful witches is history, but with this comes many monsters and demons that want to destroy them.
In the show, the sisters did not discover they were witches until they were adults, so I thought it would be interesting to see what it would be like if the Halliwell sisters discovered their powers while they were still in high school. But the high school they would be attending is the one I attend, Thornton Academy, in Saco, Maine. I chose to have the characters be enrolled at my high school because I think the difference from California to Maine could really impact the way the characters act. Maine is a lot smaller than California, therefore, it may be a lot harder to conceal their powers from the public. Also, teenagers are a lot more reckless than adults, which could end up getting one of the sisters exposed.
In the TV show, exposure is one thing that the sisters have to constantly worry about. Since they have had the ability to travel through time in some episodes, they were able to see how people have reacted to witches in different eras. Within the different eras they’ve been to, all three sisters ended up dying and coming back. But when Prue, the oldest sister, died, she stayed dead. This drastically changed the show and forced the creators to make a new sister, Paige. In my project, I would like to make a world in which all four sisters, Prue, Piper, Phoebe, and Paige, all meet and become the Power of Four instead of the Power of Three.
The Power of Three is what allows the sisters to be the most powerful witches, so I decided, if I add Paige and make it the Power of Four, they would be even stronger. With the power of four, the sisters would become almost unstoppable, and they would be able to continue to protect the world from evil in a more successful way. In the world of Charmed, it is very important for the Halliwell sisters to exist in order to keep people protected. The one downside of this is the people they are protecting do not actually accept them as who they are into their society. Society looks at the Halliwell’s as monsters instead of hero’s which “others” them which forces the sisters to keep their powers a secret because of their fears of societal rejection.
With this project I will focus on the themes of family, good vs. evil, and acceptance. These three themes are very important to the TV show, therefore they will have to 0ay a role in my adaptation of it as well. Even with the changes I will make, I do not think much about these themes will change except for maybe they will become more important with a new sister in the story.
